Living with Coyotes in Bauer Woods
Living with Coyotes in Bauer Woods
Coyotes are among our neighbors in rural Washington County. They are frequently seen in our neighborhood and other areas around Bauer Woods. Coyote activity in our area will typically increase during mating season (Sept - Nov). While they are naturally skittish, they can become more emboldened if they associate an area with food. Here are some safety precautions and actions to take if you encounter a coyote.
Safety Precautions
To deter coyotes and prevent dangerous encounters, follow these guidelines from wildlife experts:
Protect Pets: Keep cats indoors and walk dogs on a short leash (less than 6 feet), especially during dawn, dusk, and nighttime.
Remove Food Sources: Never feed coyotes. Secure trash cans with tight lids and remove outdoor pet food, fallen fruit, and birdseed, which can attract both coyotes and their prey.
Modify Your Landscape: Use motion-activated lights, sprinklers, or audible alarms to frighten them. Prune ground-level shrubs to eliminate hiding spots.
Don't Rely Solely on Fences: Coyotes can easily jump or climb 6-foot fences. Supervise pets even in fenced yards.
What to Do if You Encounter a Coyote
If you see a coyote in Bauer Woods, use hazing techniques to maintain their natural fear of humans:
Stand Your Ground: Never run, as this may trigger their chase instinct.
Make Yourself Large: Raise your arms, wave them around, and stand tall.
Be Loud: Shout "Go away!", clap your hands, or use noisemakers like whistles or air horns.
Slowly Retreat: Maintain eye contact and back away slowly while continuing hazing.
Use Deterrents: If the coyote is persistent, you can spray it with a garden hose or throw small objects like a stick or ball near it.
Immediate Emergencies: Call 911 for any immediate public safety threat or attack on a person.
